Discover the truth behind the controversial film “The Kerala Story” and its potential use as propaganda. This article delves into the film’s political implications and explores the impact it may have on public perception of Kerala’s history.

The Kerala Story is a Hindi movie that claims to be based on a real-life incident of Hindu and Christian women from Kerala who converted to Islam and joined the terrorist group ISIS. The movie, directed by Sudipto Sen and produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah, has sparked controversy and criticism for spreading communal hatred and misinformation.

The movie stars Adah Sharma, Yogita Bihani, Sonia Balani, and Siddhi Idnani as four women who fall prey to love jihad, a conspiracy theory that Muslim men lure non-Muslim women into marriage and conversion. The movie shows how these women travel to Afghanistan with their husbands and become part of ISIS, before being captured and imprisoned by the Afghan authorities.

The movie has been accused of making false and exaggerated claims about the number of women from Kerala who have joined ISIS. The movie says that 32,000 women are missing from Kerala and have been recruited by ISIS, while the actual number is much lower. According to a report by the Observer Research Foundation, only 60 to 70 individuals from Kerala joined ISIS between 2014 and 2018. The US Department of State also reported that there were only 66 individuals from India who were affiliated with ISIS in 2020.

The movie has also faced opposition from political parties and civil society groups in Kerala, who allege that it is promoting the agenda of the Sangh Parivar, a Hindu nationalist organization. They say that the movie is trying to create communal disharmony and malign the image of Kerala, which is known for its secularism and social harmony. They have demanded that the movie be banned or censored before its release.

The Kerala Story is scheduled to be released on May 5, 2023. The movie has generated a lot of curiosity and debate among the audience, who are divided over its authenticity and motive. Some people have praised the movie for exposing the reality of radicalization and terrorism, while others have condemned it for being biased and sensationalist. The question remains: Is The Kerala Story a movie or propaganda?
