What Happened?

On Monday, December 18, a total of 78 opposition MPs were suspended from both houses of parliament in New Delhi. This brings the total number of suspended MPs since December 15 to 92. Out of the 78 MPs, 33 were suspended in the Lok Sabha and 45 were suspended in the Rajya Sabha.

Why Were They Suspended?

The suspensions occurred because the parliament sessions were repeatedly disrupted by opposition MPs. They were demanding a statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah about a security breach that happened on December 13. Two men had jumped from the public gallery into the Lok Sabha hall and caused chaos. The speaker of the Lok Sabha, Om Birla, said that a high-level probe is already investigating the security breach.

Who Got Suspended?

In the Lok Sabha, 33 MPs were suspended for the remainder of the session. Some of the suspended MPs include Kalyan Banerjee, A. Raja, Dayanidhi Maran, and Adhir Ranjan Choudhary. In the Rajya Sabha, 45 MPs were suspended. Some of the suspended MPs include Jairam Ramesh, Sukhendu Sekhar Roy, and Ram Gopal Yadav.

What Did the Opposition Say?

Opposition MPs criticized the Modi government for being “autocratic” and accused them of bulldozing the opposition. They believe that the government is trying to silence dissent and avoid accountability. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said that “democratic norms are being thrown into the dustbin” and that important legislation can now be passed without any debate.

What Did the Government Say?

Union Home Minister Amit Shah accused the opposition of politicizing the security breach incident. He said that the responsibility of parliament security lies with the Lok Sabha speaker. Shah also mentioned that a high-level probe is already underway and a report will be submitted to the speaker soon.

In conclusion, the suspension of 78 opposition MPs has caused a lot of controversy in the Indian parliament. The opposition believes that the government is trying to silence them, while the government argues that they are just following the rules and investigating the security breach incident.
