Why Is TMC Cold-Shouldering Mahua?

Mahua Moitra, a prominent politician from Bengal, has faced numerous controversies and surprises throughout her political career. Despite this, her party, the All-India Trinamool Congress (TMC), has remained silent on the recent cash-for-query case against her. This silence speaks volumes about the party’s stance on the matter.

Mahua has claimed that the party fully supports her, stating, “I will come clean. The Ethics Committee will not be able to touch my hair.” However, the TMC high command in Kolkata seems unrelenting, even as Mahua has agreed to testify before the Ethics Committee.

Mahua’s Stance at Odds With Mamata’s Interests

The controversy surrounding Mahua Moitra coincided with the arrest of one of Mamata Banerjee’s trusted ministers on charges of corruption. This may explain the party leadership’s response, as both Adani and Hiranandani are potential investors in West Bengal. Mamata Banerjee has been courting these business tycoons for the state’s industrial development. Mahua’s personal attacks often disrupted the party’s delicate balance and were politically incorrect, according to a TMC MP.

Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) has pledged a Rs 15,000 crore deep-sea port project in Tejpur, while the Hiranandani Group plans to set up a logistic hub and a hyperscale data Central Park in West Bengal. These investments are crucial for the state’s industrial roadmap.

Where Does Moitra’s Political Future Stand?

The Trinamool Congress, Indian National Congress, and even the BJP leaders expect that Mahua’s case will result in recommendations for stringent measures by the Lok Sabha Speaker or the House Privilege Committee. Mahua herself has indicated that she may be suspended from the House for the upcoming winter session.

Regardless of the outcome, Mahua’s political future remains uncertain. If the TMC party takes strong action against her, she still has the option to switch to Congress, where she began her political journey and still has considerable support among the top brass.

Path Paved With As Many Thorns As Roses

Mahua Moitra, a former investment banker, entered politics by joining a project launched by the Youth Congress chief. She worked intensively in the rural interiors of Murshidabad district in 2008-2009. However, she did not receive support from the late Pranab Mukherjee, a powerful Congress leader in Bengal and national politics. This led to her denial of a ticket in the polls.

In 2010, Mahua switched to the Trinamool Congress and had a long journey within the party before being given a ticket in the Karimpur assembly seat in Nadia district. She won the seat in the 2016 state polls. Her entry into national politics came after winning the Krishnanagar parliament seat in 2018.

However, her victory was not without challenges. She faced internal conflicts within the Trinamool Congress, particularly in the Krishnanagar municipal core of her constituency. Despite this, Mahua remains determined to fight and overcome any obstacles that come her way.
